Jingle Singles: Day 10. A Spaceman Came Travelling.

Continuing on yesterday’s alien theme, it’s time for some Chris de Burgh.

LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA! LA LA LA LA LA LA LA! LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA! Peace and goodwill to all men, and love for the child.

There is no more-singable chorus anywhere in this world. (Or, I suppose, out of this world).

I really love this song. Its eerie, ethereal narrative is a perfect pairing for the synthy 70s prog rock sound. De Burgh’s storytelling is oddly persuasive. Maybe Gabriel was a spaceman with the face of an angel.

La la la la la la la la la la.

Chris de Burgh, like Yeats (and countless others) before him, predicts a Second Coming around 2000 years after the birth of Jesus. Halfway through the second decade of this new millennium, it’s easy for us to assume that they all got this horribly wrong. But maybe it means we’re about to meet a charismatic, self-possessed 15 year old with the power to change the world. Keep your eyes on YouTube, earthlings.

La la la la la la la la la la.

Peace and goodwill to all men. I hereby make my peace with the following humans (for now):

  • Open mouthed gum chewers on the tube.
  • Aggressively-elbowed older women who visit museums.
  • People who say “yourself” when they mean “you”.
  • People who are #blessed.
  • Makeup counter ladies.

And, though they are not technically mankind, with cats in the street who don’t let you stroke them. All is forgiven, bbz.

La la la la la la la la la la. And love for the child.
